St. Monica School is proud to offer Mandarin language classes. For each Chinese class, we teach our students: new words, grammar, sentences, and phrases. We teach our students to listen, talk, read and write in the Chinese Language. A test is given after each chapter, which parents are asked to review and sign for acknowledgement. St. Monica's after school Chinese language classes provide an opportunity for instruction in Mandarin. All rules and regulations which apply to St. Monica School students during the course of the school day apply to each student when they attend the St. Monica's after school Chinese Language program.
In addition to the standard teaching materials, we provide additional enrichment activities that reflect Chinese culture, important social events, political news, history, geography, children's songs, stories, poems etc. All students perform at our annual chinese New year celebration. During the 50-minute class time, our teachers use both Chinese and English to teach. We encourage and enforce our students to use Chinese language in class.
We use our current curriculum materials for grades K - 6. For 6th grade and up, we add SAT II test-simulated practices. Starting with the 7th grade students, we use integrated Chinese books that give students more complete training: listening, talking, reading, and writing. These books are currently used by California Universities Chinese classes. In addition, we give SAT in Mandarin simulated tests. When our 8th grade students graduate from St. Monica School, they should have the level of a 1st or 2nd grade University of California student. We believe our class will give your child a strong foundation for the SAT II Mandarin test (which is prepared by U.S. College of the Board). The SAT II Mandarin test score is part of the SAT test final score.
We hope our Chinese language program will be a stepping stone for your child for his/her future high school, college and career. We also hope our teaching can enrich your family relationship.
Classes are held Monday-Thursday from 3:10 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. On early dismissal days, the classes are held from 1:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. We also offer a Basic Mandarin Conversation course (Wednesdays only).
