In our primary and intermediate grades, homeroom teachers use the Mystery Science curriculum for core science instruction. Students love the comprehensive program that combines core lessons with hands on activities. In 1st grade, students are currently studying shadows. They learn how shadows are made by blocking light. They also begin to understand the earth’s rotation, learning how the sun makes shadows “move” and that it is actually the earth, not the sun, moving. One of their first activities in this unit involved moving light to cast shadows in a specific way. In addition to core instruction in the classroom, students also go to our Science room once a week for hands on experiments with our Science Specialist teacher.
